Just a quick note to Guilio. Thanks for a great evening your italian evening made me feel I was in Italy not
in Borehamwood. The food was better than I ate in Italy and the singer should be on X factor and he
would win it. Looking forward to your next event.

This restaurant is a real find, a genuine, local, family-run restuarant in London.
We booked it blind because its one of the few restaurants which would take a booking
for 12 and we had no idea what to expect. The staff were friendly and welcoming,
(even when some of our party were late arriving) and the food was excellent and
reasonably priced. If you're fed up with trendy bars and spotty teenage staff this
is a restaurant that takes its food and customer service seriously. We'll definitely be back.

This was a nice surprise. I needed a place to eat with the family after a meeting in Borehamwood.
Lovely atmosphere, very friendly and good food for the price.

Just to say thanks for a memorable evening on 28th July 2006. All our guests expressed
their delight at the excellent food and presentation. It was wonderful; your beautiful
girls were a delight, smiling the whole time.
More than one guest asked me “did you try the tiramisu” it was to die for! The later
incase you don’t know means it’s so good, they loved it so much, it wouldn’t matter
if they died. I missed it, I chose ice-cream, but I will be back to try it.
I thank you and your staff once again and Good Luck with the Big B. I can see you are
going to put Borehamwood on the map, not only with your food, but your friendly, family
atmosphere.
Best wishes and God Bless

A taste of Southern Italy
|

Borehamwood Times - June 2006

Bengiamino in Borehamwood opened just four months ago, but it is already
becoming well known for its delicious southern Italian food and authentic
Italian hospitality.
The restaurant, which is located close to the film and TV studios, is often
visited by stars of stage and screen but, whether or not you have celebrity
status, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere means that everyone is made to feel
welcome.
Inside, the newly refurbished restaurant is light and airy with vaulted ceilings
and plenty of space. During the day, the subtle background music sets the atmosphere,
while every evening, customers can enjoy live music from Bengiamino's resident
pianist.
Having worked as a chef in some of London's most prestigious restaurants over the
past 36 years, Giulio Pollano, one of Bengiamino's owners, brings with him a wealth
of experience as well as a passion for Italian cuisine. Giulio and his team have created
a menu which reflects the classic flavours of southern
Italy with lots of seafood, fresh vegetables, garlic and of course, tomatoes. In
traditional Italian style, the menu is divided into antipasto (starters), primi
(a pasta course), secondi (a main meat or fish course) and, of course, dolce (dessert).
The antipasto include the classic mozzarella, tomato and avocado salad, deepfried goat's
cheese and plenty of seafood dishes with mussels, prawns and fresh whitebait. Moving through the menu,
the pasta dishes are a combination of light delicate flavours,
such as spaghetti with courgettes, king prawns and cherry tomatoes, and stronger rustic
flavours such as pasta with a sauce of mushrooms, Italian sausage, tomatoes and cream.
For secondi, there is a selection of hand-made pizzas or a wonderful array of meat and
fish dishes such as the fillet of iamb with mushrooms and spinach or, for something
really different, a dish of swordfish cooked with a vodka sauce.
While I was choosing from the menu, I was presented with an appetizer of green and
black olives, in a delicious marinade of olive oil and fresh herbs, together with some
little chunks of fresh parmesan cheese - perfect for whetting the appetite.
For my starter, I chose the insalata di halibut e salmone (slices of smoked halibut
and smoked salmon), which arrived, beautifully presented, with a selection of salad
leaves. The sweet, delicate salmon was the perfect contrast to the intensely smoked and
slightly salty halibut, and I could have happily had the same again as a main course.
But instead I decided to choose something seasonal and opted for the spring flavours
of the fresh asparagus risotto. Perfectly seasoned with light fluffy rice and delicately
flavoured asparagus it was easily one of the best risottos I have ever tasted. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite manage a dessert but while relaxing with a coffee, I
was already planning my next visit - and working out how I would be able to leave room
for some delicious Italian ice cream.

When you walk into a restaurant and hear a piano being played,
you know you’ve pitched up somewhere special. Thus it was when
I entered Bengiamino, in Borehamwood. This Italian restaurant,
once Signor Baffi, then a Pizzeria, is now being restored to
glory by new owner Giulio Pollano and his family, who are
introducing specialities from the area near the Montecassino,
from which he originates. Mr Pollano has recruited Signor Baffi’s
former head chef Gennaro Delle Ponne, who come from the same village,
and Bruno Baffi’s former head waiter.
My starter of spaghetti with fresh salmon, cherry tomatoes, rocket
and garlic tossed in olive oil was a wonderful melange of flavours
and colours and my daughter was well pleased with insalata di
halibut e salmone (smoked salmon and smoked halibut with salad).
Having tasted my starter, she was so taken with it she had it
as a main course.
I chose a very good Dover sole with vegetables, which made dessert
impossible, though my daughter polished off an industrial portion of
chocolate mousse. I was also very content with the Falerno Del Massico
white wine from Campania.
